Project Read-San Mateo is the literacy program of the San Mateo Public Library. It is one of the Bay Area’s 25 library programs helping adults improve their reading, writing and communication skills.  Founded in 1985, Project Read-San Mateo provides free, confidential and goal-directed basic literacy tutoring in small groups or one-on-one to adults over 16.  These adults want to improve their literacy skills so they can meet their goals and be effective as family members, as workers, and as community members. When the students enter Project Read, they set specific goals for what they need to learn and be able to do. Project Read trains volunteer tutors who then meet twice a week with their students.  Project Read serves residents of and workers in the cities of San Mateo, Burlingame, and the Town of Hillsborough.

Community Need:  According to the results of the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy, 15% of San Mateo County residents are in the lowest level of four levels, Below Basic Skills.   According to the 2000 Census, 11.2% of the residents do not have a high school diploma.  Project Read serves these people, along with those who were awarded high school diplomas without having developed the reading and writing skills they need.
