Project Read is the adult literacy program of the San Francisco Public Library. Since 1983, Project Read has provided free one-on-one tutoring, workshops, and ongoing instructional support to English-speaking adults who seek to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Project Read has trained more than 4,000 volunteers who have helped an equal number of adult learners identify personal literacy goals, improve their skills, and enhance their lives. Project Read tutors contribute over 10,000 volunteer hours each year to create a more literate San Francisco. Through direct outreach and partnerships with non-profit agencies and civic organizations, Project Read recruits learners and volunteer tutors while raising awareness of literacy issues. Project Read is a service of the San Francisco Public Library and is funded by the City and County of San Francisco, federal and state grants, and contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals. Additional support is provided by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.
