Low literacy levels occur across social and economic classes and the problem often continues into future generations. The cost is high for all, particularly to those who are unable to achieve their personal, family, and work related goals. Uninformed citizens are unable to take active roles in their communities, and are less able to make good choices as voters. Help change these statistics by becoming a volunteer with our program. Become a volunteer tutor, group leader – the possibilities are open. Tutor training includes an orientation to the program: training on topics such as learning styles, goal setting, spelling and writing issues, and ideas for getting started. Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week for two hours each time, at a time and place convenient to both people. Staff support and workshops are available to assist tutors in the use of materials and tutoring methods.

In addition to tutoring, let us know what your strengths or hobbies are, for we’d like you to share your talents with us: Are you comfortable facilitating multicultural groups? Become a leader for our Conversation groups. * Are you saavy at Web 2.0 social networking or excel in workshop presentations? Help prepare our adult learners for 21st Century opportunities. * Are you a whiz with computers? Help our ESL learners build conversational language skills using programs such as Mango or Rosetta Stone! Help others build computers skill that put them on course for a new job or career. * Maybe you’re an expert in researching funding opportunities – we’d love to have you volunteer! We’d love to talk with you. Call us to talk about the possibilities for your volunteer experience. Skills * Patience, flexibility, sensitivity: Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Patience, flexibility and sensitivity are essential.
